Do yourself a favour and start prepping and freezing bone broth during your pregnancy! Your postpartum self will be thanking you!
Broth is such a great tool for postpartum recovery. It is extremely nourishing, filled with vitamins and minerals and has been considered a necessity traditionally for recovery in general. Whether you give birth vaginally or via c-section, your body is working hard to repair, and providing it with this highly nutrient-dense tool will speed up your recovery.
Delish & Nutrish Bone Broth
Ingredients
Keep in mind that bone broth is meant to be made with whatever nutritious veggies you have, so don't panic if you don't have exactly e.g. 2 carrots! On you first try, maybe you'll only use 1 carrot, maybe the next you'll decide you'll throw in 3 depending on what you have on hand!
Raw or cooked bones (beef, chicken, duck, turkey…) -
2 Carrots
1 Onion
2 Celery Stalks
Aromatics: Bay leaf, rosemary, parsley, thyme, peppercorns, sea salt, garlic, anything your heart desires!
Water (enough to cover the bones)
Directions
If your bones are raw, roast them in the oven at 400F for 30 mins for a more flavourful broth (or use bones from a an already cooked whole chicken!). Place them in a pot
Chop up the onion, carrots, celery, add that to the pot
Add in the aromatics
Cover with water (ideally filtered!), bring to a boil, then simmer for 8 hours, up to 24. You can make this in the slow cooker on low as well (the longer the better), or in a pressure cooker for 2 hours
Strain into glass jars and refrigerate. You can remove the layer of fat that will form if you'd like
And remember! Once refrigerated (about 24hours), the more gelatinous it is, the more collagen it has!
Tips
If you would like to freeze your broth, make sure to leave a few inches at the top of your jar to prevent it from cracking. You also want to make sure the broth has cooled completely before placing it in the freezer.
Add in sea salt before enjoying as a warming beverage, in soups or stews, to cook rice in or in any recipe that call for stock!
